Helicopter Services for Power Grids, Transmission Lines and Utilities

SkyMatch Group provides and coordinates helicopter flight services for electricity utilities, transmission and distribution system operators, EPC contractors and maintenance companies: visual and thermal line patrols, LiDAR corridor survey, line-crew and engineer transport, conductor stringing and pulling-line support, tower, pole and component placement by external load, remote substation access and emergency grid restoration. SkyMatch does not operate aircraft; a licensed helicopter operator confirms aircraft, crew qualifications, timing, landing sites and price for each mission.

Grid work rarely fails on the flight itself. It stalls on corridor length, outage windows, lift weights at altitude, landing zones along the right-of-way, and whether the work repeats every season. Use the calculators below to put numbers on those points, then send the mission for review even if some details are still open.

Where helicopters are used on the grid

Transmission line patrol and inspection

Visual, thermal (infrared) and corona inspection of high-voltage lines across long corridors, mountains, forests and wetlands where ground patrols take weeks.

LiDAR and vegetation corridor survey

Aerial LiDAR and imagery of the right-of-way for clearance, sag and vegetation encroachment analysis ahead of maintenance or new-build design.

Line crews, engineers and substation access

Moving linemen, protection engineers and tools to towers and remote substations that have no road or only seasonal access, including multi-site days.

Conductor stringing and pulling-line support

Pulling pilot lines and supporting stringing on new-build or reconductoring projects, where the operator confirms it is feasible for the span, terrain and aircraft.

Tower, pole and component placement

Setting poles, tower sections, insulators, spacers and equipment by external load when the operator confirms weight, rigging and density altitude on the day.

Emergency grid restoration

Rapid damage assessment and crew and material delivery after storms, ice, floods or wildfire, when road access is the reason restoration takes longer.

Start with the numbers

These are the SkyMatch calculators utility and EPC teams use most. Each gives indicative planning figures you can carry straight into the request.

What to prepare before you ask

  • Line or corridor name, voltage level, length in km and start and end coordinates or KMZ.
  • Mission type: patrol, survey, crew transport, stringing, external load or restoration.
  • Outage or live-line constraints and the working window you have.
  • Heaviest single lift with dimensions, and the elevation of the work sites.
  • Number of people, tools and whether crews return the same day.
  • Whether the work repeats (annual patrol programme, multi-year project).

What happens after you submit

  1. A SkyMatch coordinator reads the mission and comes back with anything missing before an operator review is possible.
  2. We identify independent licensed operators that may be able to assess the requirement.
  3. The mission brief goes out for assessment; aircraft, availability, permissions and operating limits are theirs to confirm.
  4. You receive the quotation options that come back, with the conditions attached to each.
  5. Nothing is booked, priced or promised until an operator confirms, and you and the operator are never connected automatically.

What is fixed, and what is not

  • SkyMatch Group is an independent provider and coordinator, not an aircraft operator.
  • Aircraft type, availability, price, weather limits, permits, landing permission and any live-line or external-load approvals are confirmed by a licensed helicopter operator and the relevant authorities and landowners.
  • Every request is reviewed by a person.
  • Calculator results are indicative planning figures, not quotes.

Questions utilities and EPC teams ask first

What do utilities use helicopters for on power lines?

Mainly line patrol and thermal inspection, LiDAR corridor survey, transporting line crews to towers and remote substations, stringing support, placing poles, tower sections and components by external load, and damage assessment and restoration after storms.

Can you arrange live-line (energised) work from a helicopter?

Only where a licensed operator holds the specific approvals and the grid owner authorises it. Say in the request whether the line will be energised or de-energised, and the operator confirms what is possible.

How much can a helicopter lift for tower or pole work?

It depends on the aircraft, the site elevation, temperature and rigging. Use the payload calculator for planning, and the operator confirms the real lift limit for your sites.

We have an annual patrol programme. Is that handled differently from one mission?

Yes. Recurring patrols and multi-year projects are structured differently from single flights, so state in the request that the work repeats and how often.

How fast can you help after a storm outage?

As quickly as possible, subject to operator availability. No response time is promised in advance.

Do you show prices for power line helicopter work?

No. Price depends on aircraft, positioning, hours, lift work and permits, and is confirmed only by the operator after the mission is reviewed. The cost-drivers calculator shows what moves the price.

Planning guides and tools

Calculators return planning estimates only — not quotations. Aircraft availability, permissions, weather, landing access and operator terms are reviewed per mission.

Request a Mission Assessment

Send the grid mission as you know it today. A coordinator reviews it and tells you what is still missing before a price can be given.

Reviewed by a person. Price, availability and landing permission are confirmed only by the operator.

SkyMatch Group provides and coordinates helicopter flight services for companies worldwide. SkyMatch does not operate aircraft; aircraft, availability, price, weather, permits and landing are confirmed by a licensed operator.
