What actually moves this number

  • Where the road figure comes from. A published operator or authority time is evidence; a mapping-app estimate is not, and this tool will not use one.
  • The ground legs nobody counts. Drive to the departure pad and site vehicle from the landing area routinely consume more time than the sector itself.
  • Whether the landing area is at the work front or at a strip some distance from it. It changes the whole comparison.
  • Road condition and season. A road that is impassable for part of the year is a scheduling problem, not a travel-time problem.
  • Fatigue and driver-hours rules, convoy requirements and overnight stops, which can dominate the schedule on long corridors.
  • Crew size against usable seats after tools and equipment, since two rotations return less time per hour flown than one.

What this tool does not decide

  • It does not price the mission. Helicopter charter is whole-aircraft and per mission, and only the performing licensed operator can quote it.
  • It does not confirm a helicopter is available, or available on your dates. Aircraft positioning in remote regions is often the binding constraint.
  • It does not confirm anyone may land at your site. Surface, slope, obstacles, site permission and the day's weather are assessed by the operator and the site owner.
  • It does not publish a road travel time we cannot cite. Corridors without a published figure use yours and say so.
  • It does not put a monetary value on the hours. That is a separate, clearly labelled tool.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the road travel times come from?

Only from primary publishers: a road or transport authority, a government project document, or a site operator's own regulatory or technical report — quoted verbatim with the publication date and the date we last checked it. Mapping apps and trip-planning sites are not used. Corridors with no published figure ask for yours instead.

Why is only one corridor prefilled?

Because so far only one remote-project corridor we cover has a road travel time stated by an acceptable publisher. We checked Papua New Guinea, Western Australia and the Northern Territory, Indonesian nickel corridors, the Las Bambas corridor in Peru and Canada's winter roads: those publishers state distances, road names and closure dates, but not a travel time. We would rather show one sourced figure than six invented ones.

Does the calculator prove a helicopter is worth it?

No, and it will tell you when the numbers say otherwise. Once ground legs and briefing time are counted, short corridors often save little, and the honest case then rests on road condition, seasonal access, fatigue rules or a site with no road at all.
