An eVTOL — electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft — lifts off and lands vertically, like a helicopter, but is driven by electric motors rather than a fuel-burning engine turning a single main rotor. Most designs use distributed propulsion: several smaller rotors or ducted fans spread across the airframe, some of which tilt forward for cruise. The category is being developed for short-distance passenger transportation — what the industry calls urban air mobility or advanced air mobility — and the popular press often describes the same machines as flying taxis or passenger drones.
Some concepts are piloted; others are designed for eventual autonomous operation with remote supervision. Both depend on ground infrastructure known as vertiports, which combine a landing area with electrical charging, passenger handling and maintenance. None of that changes the basic rule of commercial aviation: an aircraft type must be certified and an operator approved before it may carry paying passengers.

What is an eVTOL?
An eVTOL is an electric vertical takeoff and landing aircraft: it lifts off and lands vertically like a helicopter but uses electric motors, usually several of them distributed across the airframe, instead of a single engine driving one main rotor. The category is being developed mainly for short-distance passenger transportation between city centres, airports and nearby destinations.
Can I book an air taxi today?
In most of the world, no. Commercial passenger air-taxi service requires the aircraft type to be certified, the operator to hold an air operator approval, the airspace and vertiport infrastructure to be in place, and local authorities to permit the flights. Where those pieces are not yet complete, the service is not commercially bookable. SkyMatch does not sell or book eVTOL flights.
Are passenger drones available?
"Passenger drone" is a popular term for a small autonomous or remotely supervised eVTOL carrying people. Demonstration and test flights have taken place in several countries, but general commercial passenger service is not broadly available. Treat any offer to book one as something to verify directly with the local civil aviation authority.
What is the difference between an eVTOL and a helicopter?
A helicopter uses one or two engines driving large rotors and burns aviation fuel; it is a mature, certified category available worldwide for everything from executive transfers to medical and heavy-lift work. An eVTOL uses distributed electric propulsion, is aimed at short urban and airport hops with small passenger loads, and is still working through certification and infrastructure in most markets.
Will eVTOL replace helicopters?
Probably not. The two categories are more likely to coexist. Helicopters remain the practical choice for longer sectors, remote and offshore destinations, larger payloads, medical and emergency work, and any market without vertiport or charging infrastructure. eVTOL concepts target short, repeatable urban routes.
Where will air taxis operate first?
The markets most often discussed combine short high-value journeys, supportive regulators and space for vertiports — the Gulf, several US metropolitan areas, parts of Europe and Asian city-states. Which city actually goes first depends on certification progress, operator readiness and local permissions rather than on any published schedule.
Can an eVTOL transfer passengers from an airport?
Airport-to-city transfer is the use case most developers describe, because the journey is short, repeatable and painful by road. Delivering it requires a vertiport or approved landing area at both ends, airspace integration with existing traffic, and passenger handling and security arrangements agreed with the airport.
How many passengers can an air taxi carry?
Announced passenger eVTOL configurations are small — commonly a pilot plus a handful of seats, with limited baggage allowance because every kilogram affects battery range. Final seating depends on the certified configuration of each aircraft type.
