London to Silverstone by helicopter

On race weekend the A43 turns a 75-mile drive into a three-hour crawl. From central London the same journey is a 22-minute flight into the circuit's own event helipad, with a marshalled buggy to the paddock and hospitality suites.

Where you take off in London

Battersea Heliport (EGLW)

London's only licensed commercial heliport, on the south bank at Nine Elms. Arrive 15 minutes before your slot; there is drop-off parking, a private lounge and security screening. Battersea operates within fixed noise-abatement hours and closes for late evening movements, so post-race returns after the curfew route to Northolt or Luton instead.

RAF Northolt (EGWU)

A military airfield in West London that releases civil slots. Faster than Battersea from the western postcodes, but slots are allocated by the station and can be withdrawn for operational reasons, so we always hold a Battersea or Luton fallback for event days.

London Luton and Biggin Hill

Both handle helicopters alongside jets, which makes them the practical choice when the party is arriving into London by private jet the same morning. The helicopter positions on the FBO apron so guests step off one aircraft and onto the other without leaving airside.

Where you land at Silverstone

Silverstone runs an official event helipad immediately adjacent to the circuit across grand prix weekends, under CAA-approved temporary arrangements and strict slot control, with a marshalled shuttle to the paddock, the Wing and the hospitality suites. There is no walk-up landing: every arrival carries a pre-booked slot time. Landing on the infield or in adjacent farmland is not permitted. When the pad is at capacity we route to Turweston (EGBT), two miles away, with a pre-booked car for the final leg.

Slot planning

Timing the day from London

  • Book inbound and outbound as one slot pair — post-race departures are released in waves and the last aircraft out can wait 45–70 minutes.
  • Land 90 minutes before the first session you want to see; helipad to suite, including accreditation, runs 20–25 minutes.
  • Leave central London 45 minutes before your Battersea slot on race Saturday — the ground leg to the heliport is the part that goes wrong, not the flight.
  • Friday practice arrivals are usually available at short notice; Saturday and Sunday need two to six weeks depending on the event.
  • Above six passengers, two aircraft on adjacent slots is faster through the pad and usually cheaper than one heavy cabin.
FAQ

Silverstone helicopter questions

How long is a helicopter flight from London to Silverstone?

About 22 minutes from Battersea Heliport or Northolt, 20 from Luton and 32 from Biggin Hill. Driving the same route on race Sunday routinely takes three hours or more once the A43 and the car-park queues build.

How much does a helicopter from London to Silverstone cost?

Indicatively from £2,600 one-way and around £4,400 for a same-day return from Battersea in a four-to-six seat twin, before VAT, landing and event slot fees. Luton is slightly cheaper at about £2,500 one-way; Biggin Hill is the longest London leg at around £3,000.

Where does the helicopter land at Silverstone?

At the circuit's official event helipad next to the venue, which operates under slot control across the race weekend with a marshalled shuttle to the paddock and hospitality. If the pad is full, the fallback is Turweston Aerodrome two miles away with a car for the last leg.

Which London heliport is best for Silverstone?

Battersea for central London guests, Northolt for the western postcodes, and Luton or Farnborough when the group is arriving by private jet and wants a direct apron-side handover. All four are within 20–25 minutes' flying of the circuit.

Can we fly back to London straight after the race?

Yes, but departures are sequenced. Taking a slot around the penultimate race gets you out clean; leaving with the crowd typically means a 45–70 minute hold on the pad. Battersea's noise hours also close late-evening arrivals, in which case we return to Northolt or Luton.

How far in advance should we book?

Two to six weeks for Saturday and Sunday of a grand prix weekend; Friday is often available with a few days' notice. Cancellation slots do appear in the final week — message the mission desk for live availability.
