Helicopter Charter in Greece: How to Compare Offers for Athens and Island Transfers
Greek helicopter offers often look alike — an aircraft photo, a route and a total — but they can hide very different things: who actually flies, where the aircraft starts, what luggage fits and what happens on a windy day. This guide is the checklist we use to make offers comparable before a client accepts one.

Short answer
How do you compare helicopter charter quotes in Greece?
Compare written offers line by line, not totals. Each offer should name the operating company and its Air Operator Certificate (issued in Greece by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority), the aircraft type and registration, how many passengers and bags it carries, where the aircraft is positioned from, the exact landing point at each end and who confirmed it, waiting or overnight costs, the operator's weather policy, and the cancellation and refund terms. If an offer leaves any of these blank, ask before you compare.
Who actually flies your flight
A paid passenger flight in Greece is flown by an operator holding an Air Operator Certificate. The Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA) publishes its AOC and commercial air transport information, and EASA explains that the AOC is issued by the operator's national authority. A broker, concierge, booking site or hotel desk can arrange the flight but does not hold that certificate. SkyMatch is a broker: it prepares the request and compares licensed operators' options; it never operates aircraft.
- Ask for the operating company's legal name and AOC number in writing, before payment
- Check that the same company is named as the operator on the written offer and contract
- Check that the aircraft registration offered belongs to that operator
- If the seller will not name the operator before you pay, treat that as a reason to pause
What a comparable written offer must state
Use this table to line up two or three offers. A missing line is not a saving — it is a cost or a condition you have not seen yet.
| Line on the offer | Why it matters on Greek routes | What to ask |
|---|---|---|
| Operating carrier and AOC | Several sellers can resell the same operator's aircraft | Legal name, AOC number, country of certificate |
| Aircraft type and registration | Cabin size and baggage space vary widely between light singles and twins | Type, registration, seat count used for your group |
| Passengers and luggage | Island trips often carry more luggage than the cabin allows | Bags per person, total weight, soft or hard cases |
| Positioning | The aircraft may start at a base far from your pick-up point | Where it flies from, and whether positioning is included |
| Landing point at each end | Airport, authorised helipad or private site have different rules | Exact point, who controls it, who confirmed permission |
| Handling, landing and airport fees | Island airports and private sites can charge separately | Included, estimated or billed after the flight |
| Waiting, return and overnight | A same-day return may mean the aircraft waits or flies empty | Waiting time included, overnight costs, crew duty limits |
| Weather and wind policy | Summer north winds over the Aegean can delay or stop flights | Who decides, what happens to payment, what the fallback is |
| Cancellation, refund and payee | Terms differ between operator and reseller | Who you pay, currency, deadlines and refund conditions |
Landing points: airport, authorised helipad or private site
Where you can land decides the aircraft, the timing and the paperwork. In Greece, 14 regional airports — including several island airports — are run under concession agreements published by the HCAA; other airports and helipads are run by other bodies. A hotel, villa or event lawn is a private site: it needs the controller's consent and the operator's own assessment, and it can be refused.
Airport to airport
The most predictable option: published procedures and handling. Ask how you reach the final address from the island airport and whether a car is part of the plan.
Authorised helipad
Closer to the destination. Ask the operator to confirm the helipad is usable for your aircraft and time of day.
Hotel, villa, yacht or event site
Never assume. The site controller must agree and the operator decides whether the site is suitable. Get both answers in writing before you rely on the plan.

Wind, season and timing
Greece's national weather service describes the summer north winds over the Aegean known as the Etesians (often called meltemi). They are a normal part of summer flying, and on some days they delay, reroute or stop helicopter flights; the pilot in command makes the final decision. Plan as if a delay is possible.
- Avoid tight connections: leave a time buffer between the helicopter and a ferry, flight or ceremony
- Ask each operator what happens if wind stops the flight: rebooking, refund, or a different landing point
- Agree a ground or sea fallback before the day, not on the quay
- For a wedding or event, ask whether guests can be moved in several shorter rotations instead of one large aircraft
Brief by mission type
Airport-to-island VIP transfer
Give the arrival flight number and time, passenger count, bag count and final address. Ask whether the helicopter meets you at the airport or you transfer to another point first.
Island-hopping or multi-stop day
List each stop, the time on the ground at each one, and whether the aircraft waits. Waiting time and crew duty limits often decide whether a day plan is realistic.
Weddings, villas and events
Name the venue and its owner, the ceremony time and the number of guests. Venue landing is a permission question first and an aviation question second.
Business travel and roadshows
Give the meeting addresses, fixed times and how much flexibility you have. Mainland and island legs may need different aircraft or landing points.
Filming, survey and technical work
These are aerial-work missions with their own approvals. Send them as a separate brief with coordinates, payload and timings.
Helicopter, ferry or fixed-wing: the honest trade-offs
| Option | Usually best when | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|
| Helicopter | Time is short, the destination is far from the port or airport, or the group is small | Wind days, luggage limits, landing permission at private sites |
| Fast ferry or private boat | Luggage is heavy, the group is large, or the schedule has slack | Sea state, port transfers, timetable changes |
| Scheduled or private fixed-wing | Both ends have airports and the distance is long | Ground legs at each end, airport opening hours |
What SkyMatch does and does not do
- Does: turns your trip into one complete request, asks suitable licensed operators, and lines their written options up side by side
- Does: asks each operator the questions in the table above and shows you the answers
- Does not: operate aircraft, hold an AOC, or promise availability, price, landing permission or weather
- Does not: put you in direct contact with an operator before you choose to proceed
- Does not: publish prices — every figure comes from an operator for your date and route

Frequently asked questions
Who flies a helicopter charter booked through a broker in Greece?+
A licensed operator holding an Air Operator Certificate flies it. In Greece the certificate is issued by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority. The broker arranges the request and does not operate the aircraft, so ask for the operator's legal name and AOC number before you pay.
Why do two Greek helicopter quotes for the same route differ so much?+
Usually because they include different things: positioning from a distant base, waiting time, landing and handling fees, a larger or smaller aircraft, or different cancellation terms. Compare the lines of each offer, not just the total.
Can a helicopter land at my hotel or villa in Greece?+
Only if the site's controller agrees and the operator judges the site suitable for the aircraft and conditions. It can be refused. Ask for both confirmations in writing before you plan around a private landing.
Does wind affect helicopter flights to the Greek islands?+
It can. Greece's national weather service describes summer north winds over the Aegean, the Etesians or meltemi. On some days they delay or stop flights, and the pilot makes the final decision, so keep a time buffer and agree a fallback in advance.
How much luggage can we take on a helicopter transfer in Greece?+
It depends on the aircraft and the passengers' weight, and baggage space is limited in light helicopters. Give each operator the number of bags, their approximate weight and whether they are soft or hard cases, and ask for the limit in writing.
Does SkyMatch publish helicopter prices for Greece?+
No. Prices depend on the operator, aircraft, date, positioning and landing point, so SkyMatch shows cost factors only and the operator gives the price for your request.
