South Africa helicopter RFQ calculator

Choose a South African sector — Cape Town to Franschhoek or the Winelands, Johannesburg to a Sabi Sand or Kruger lodge, or a city executive movement — add your date, passengers and landing site, and this calculator returns an indicative charter range in ZAR with a billable-hours breakdown. It is a planning frame, not a quotation.

South African helicopter charter is priced per aircraft and per mission. Safari sectors are the ones where baggage rules bite hardest — soft bags only on most lodge legs — and lodge airstrips and helipads always need the property's agreement. SkyMatch is an independent helicopter charter broker and does not operate aircraft.

Mission inputs

The figures above are a preliminary planning estimate for the route, aircraft category and passenger count you entered. They reflect estimated flight time and typical market cost bands — not a live operator quotation. Only the licensed operator that flies the mission can confirm aircraft availability, landing permissions, operational feasibility and final pricing. Use this estimate to scope the trip, then send it to SkyMatch for a managed charter review.

Indicative mission range

R 33,500 – R 57,500

Indicative only, in ZAR. Final charter pricing depends on aircraft type, positioning, operator availability, landing requirements, crew, weather and operational conditions.

Sector flight time (one way)

~25 min

Cape Town → Franschhoek / Winelands

Billable flight hours

1.3 h

Includes positioning, waiting and any empty return leg

Aircraft category

Light single (H125 class, 3–4 pax)

Assumed hourly band R 22,000–R 34,000

Landing point

Airport apron / approved heliport

Approval, slots and fees move the total independently of distance

Target date

Availability is confirmed only by the operator

  • Cape south-easters, coastal fog and highveld afternoon thunderstorms decide whether a sector flies, and bush sectors are daylight-bound. The crew's decision on the day governs.

Preliminary estimate for planning purposes only — not a confirmed price, availability or booking. Final routing, operational feasibility and pricing must be confirmed by the selected licensed operator.

Turn this estimate into a mission request

The figures above are a planning frame, not an offer. Send the mission and SkyMatch reviews it, researches operators holding the relevant approvals and comes back with current options. Your inputs are carried across — nothing needs retyping.

What actually moves this number

  • Positioning: if no suitable aircraft is based at your departure point on your date, the empty ferry flight in and out is chargeable time.
  • Empty return legs on one-way transfers, unless the operator already has follow-on work at your destination.
  • Aircraft category: baggage volume, over-water or mountain sectors and headcount decide the category more often than distance does.
  • Landing, handling, parking and slot fees at each end, plus any approval process for resort, villa or event sites.
  • Season and peak weeks, where availability rather than distance limits your date.
  • Crew duty and waiting time where the aircraft is held on site rather than released between legs.

What this tool does not decide

  • It does not check whether an aircraft is available on your date — only operators can answer that.
  • It does not approve a landing point. Resort, villa, event and protected-area sites need operator assessment and, often, written permission.
  • It does not price taxes, handling, catering, ground transfers or overnight crew costs, which come from the operator's own quotation.
  • It is not an offer, and no figure here binds SkyMatch or any operator.

SkyMatch Group is an independent helicopter charter broker and a human-reviewed mission platform. It does not operate aircraft. Every flight is performed by an independent licensed operator, and every introduction is approved by SkyMatch before it happens.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a quotation?

No. It is an indicative planning frame. Final charter pricing depends on aircraft type, positioning, operator availability, landing requirements, crew, weather and operational conditions. Send the mission and SkyMatch reviews it before obtaining operator pricing.

Why does a one-way cost close to a return?

Because the aircraft normally flies back to base empty. Unless the operator has follow-on work at your destination, that empty leg is billed — which is why the calculator adds it to a one-way.

How long is Johannesburg to the Sabi Sand by helicopter?

Plan around 90 minutes airborne as a direct rotary sector in normal conditions. Many parties instead fly fixed-wing to a bush strip and use a short helicopter or road leg — a specialist will compare both.

What baggage rules apply on safari legs?

Soft bags only on most lodge sectors: no wheels, no hard shells, and a per-guest weight limit set by the operator. Declare oversize or photographic equipment before quoting.

Which currency applies?

South African operators normally quote in ZAR, some in USD or EUR for international clients. Taxes, handling and payment terms come from the operator's own quotation.

Can I charter by the seat?

No. You charter the whole aircraft. Passenger count matters when it forces a larger category or a second rotation, and baggage volume often drives that decision before headcount does.

Does SkyMatch operate these flights?

No. SkyMatch is an independent helicopter charter broker and coordination platform. Flights are performed by independent licensed operators and remain subject to their availability, aircraft suitability, weather, landing permission, crew limits and local regulation.
