Charter helicopters reach places roads do not, but remote missions add fuel planning, landing-site assessment, permit and communications requirements. Feasibility depends on aircraft range and performance at altitude and temperature, an acceptable landing area, and any protected-area or border permissions.
Lodges, research camps, mountain huts, industrial sites and off-grid properties are routine helicopter work — provided the planning is done properly rather than assumed.
The four constraints that decide it
Remote missions succeed or fail on these:
- Range and refuelling — where the last usable fuel point is on the route.
- Performance — altitude, temperature and payload cut into what an aircraft can lift.
- Landing area — a firm, level, obstacle-free site the operator will accept.
- Permissions — protected areas, national parks, private concessions and border zones.
Safety planning that is not optional
For genuinely remote legs, operators plan communications, tracking, survival equipment and a diversion option. Expect that to appear in the quote — it is a sign the operator is doing the job properly.

Can the helicopter wait on site?
Yes, standby time is normally chargeable by the hour and must be planned against crew duty limits and daylight.
Who assesses the landing site?
The operator, using coordinates, imagery and often a reconnaissance overflight before committing to a first landing.
