Patagonia expedition ship and yacht helicopter transfers

Vessel-related helicopter work in southern Chile is mostly about the gap between a port call and where people actually need to be: a guest joining late, a crew rotation, a VIP leaving mid-itinerary, a medical or schedule contingency. Punta Arenas is the workable base, with Puerto Williams as the far-south node. SkyMatch is a helicopter charter broker; we do not operate aircraft and we do not plan a landing on a vessel unless a certified helideck plus operator and captain approval are in place. Everything below is subject to operator availability, weather, landing permission and Chilean regulation.

Coverage
Worldwide, subject to independent operator availability on your route and dates.
Who it's for
Expedition ship operators, yacht captains and managers, polar programme coordinators, guest-experience teams and travel designers moving passengers or crew through Punta Arenas, Puerto Williams and the southern channels.
How it works
Send route, dates, passengers and luggage — offers from suitable independent operators are returned for comparison.
Who operates the flight
An independent third-party operator. SkyMatch coordinates and does not operate aircraft; operational responsibility remains with the operator.

Helicopter transfers for expedition ships and private yachts in southern Chile: Punta Arenas and Puerto Williams port connections, guest and crew movements, shore landing points, and what a deck landing actually requires.

Port-side and approved shore landing areas are the default plan. Passengers move between the landing point and the vessel by the ship's own ground or tender arrangements.
A deck landing needs a certified helideck, the operator's approval for that deck and aircraft type, and the captain's agreement. Where any of the three is missing, we plan the nearest approved shore point instead.
Punta Arenas (PUQ) carries the airport, handling and fuel, so guest joins and departures are usually built around a PUQ connection with the helicopter covering the local leg.
Puerto Williams sits across the Beagle Channel and is the southernmost node of any size; local rotary work around Isla Navarino is realistic, but the long transit from Natales or Punta Arenas is fuel-critical and often better flown fixed-wing.
Crew rotations are usually the most price-sensitive movement and the most schedule-flexible, which makes them the easiest to align with an aircraft already positioned in the region.
Weather governs everything: wind over the Strait of Magellan and the Beagle Channel routinely moves or cancels sectors, so a vessel plan needs slack rather than a fixed slot.
Antarctic programmes staging through Punta Arenas or Puerto Williams generate legitimate local helicopter work. SkyMatch does not present Chile-to-Antarctica helicopter flights as a bookable product.
Cape Horn area movements are treated as remote operations with fuel planning and an accepted possibility of no-go, not as a scenic add-on.

Frequently Asked Questions

We arrange the helicopter element around the vessel: a port-side connection at Punta Arenas or Puerto Williams, or a flight to an approved shore landing area agreed with the ship. Whether the aircraft can go to the vessel itself depends on a certified helideck and both operator and captain approval.

Only where the yacht has a certified helideck, the operator is approved for that deck and aircraft, and the captain agrees for that date and sea state. We verify rather than assume; where it is not in place we plan a shore landing point and a tender or port leg.

Punta Arenas. It has the airport, handling, fuel and the fixed-wing links that guests use to join or leave, so the helicopter leg is normally built around a PUQ connection. Puerto Williams handles far-south local movements.

Yes. Crew rotations are a common requirement and are usually the most flexible on timing, which helps availability and cost. The same operator, weather and landing constraints apply.

As much as the itinerary allows. In the November–March window the southern fleet is committed early. Short-notice requests are still put to operators, but the option set is narrow and positioning cost rises.

Not as something SkyMatch offers. Punta Arenas and Puerto Williams function as gateways, and helicopters there handle local guest, crew and VIP movements. Any Antarctic flying belongs to the specialised programmes that operate it under their own approvals.

Per aircraft and per mission: aircraft category, sector time, positioning, fuel logistics, crew duty and overnight, landing fees, waiting time and season. Vessel work often carries standby time because the aircraft is held against a moving schedule, and that is quoted explicitly.

No. The requirement comes to SkyMatch, we review it and approach suitable licensed operators, then coordinate the commercial process. That keeps the comparison operator-neutral and the vessel's constraints properly represented.
