It replaces a long Carretera Austral drive on largely unsealed road. Aircraft availability in Aysén is limited, so lead time matters more here than in the far south.

Yes, for practical purposes it is the region's gateway. Balmaceda (BBA) takes the scheduled traffic and handles private aircraft, and Coyhaique — about an hour away by road — is where most itineraries stage. Any air transfer into the remote parts of Aysén normally starts from one of those two points.

Long, and variable. The Carretera Austral is the only through route for much of Aysén, with unsealed sections, ferry crossings on some legs and weather that changes journey times materially. A lodge that looks close to Balmaceda on a map can be most of a day away once the lake and the terrain are accounted for.

For the longer legs, usually. Getting to Aysén from Santiago or from southern Patagonia is a fixed-wing job — the distances are too great for a sensible rotary sector. The helicopter's role here is the final gap from Balmaceda or Coyhaique to a lodge with no runway, which is exactly what fixed-wing cannot do.
